Assignment #11: THE Final Edit
It’s that time, you’ve grown as photographers. No matter how professional a photographer you are there’s always a little room for some editing. We’ll ignore the philosophical debate on “to edit” or “not to edit.” And we’ll simply go with editing.
For this assignment you should look through your photographs and select your favorite five. Yes, this will be hard. From there, you’ll be narrowing it down even further. I’d like you to select your absolute favorite photograph this term. (Okay, this may be difficult for some, you can choose two.)
What will you be doing with this photograph(s)? Why editing of course!
Through the use of our editing software, Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo x2, you will “perfect” the photograph. And enhance the final composition.
The Final Edit will then be printed and framed for display.

Part 1 - Selecting Your Favourites
- Narrow down your photographs to your favourite 5 photos.
- Examine your 5 photos to see what you would like to “improve” and/or “change” in the photographs.
- Can these changes be made through the use of the software? If yes, choose your absolute favorite photo to edit (two at most – think of the time you have)
- Create a folder “Final Edit” in your h:drive. Copy your 5 favourite photographs to this folder.
Name each of the photographs to make it easier for you when looking at them.
Part 2 - Editing Your Favourite
- Create a folder “Fav2” in the folder you created above.
- Copy your top two photographs to this folder.
- Name them “Favourite_Original”; if you are submitting two name the second “Favourite_Original_2”
- Using the photo editing software and the knowledge you’ve gained edit your selected favourite.
- Save the edited version and original version of the favorite photograph(s).
Name the edited the photographs "Favorite_Edited" and "Favourite_Edited_2"/
Part 3 - Blogging
- Post your “original” photograph alongside with your “edited version.”
- Write a brief summary describing how/why you edited the favorite photograph(s).
- You may wish to describe how you used the compositional rules to engage the viewer and bring them into your photographs, describing the placement of the subject. You may also wish to describe your interpretation of item to find. What you liked or disliked about the photograph.
Part 4 - Emailing Finished Product
- Send an email to D’Alice to let her know it’s time to print and frame!
Overall Criteria
- Try to select an interesting & original photograph. Don’t worry whether there is something “happening” in the shot; engage the viewer’s eye by what you focus on and how you frame your subject.
- Always ask yourself –“What is my focal point; how does my lighting look?” Should I be dodging and burning? Should I be enhancing the colour contrast to make “it” pop?
